RU 486

What is it?

A series of 3 pills given by a doctor, in order to terminate a pregnancy. The pills block the effects of progesterone, altering the blood supply to the uterus and placenta, and cutting off the supply of blood and nourishment to the developing embryo.

A second visit to the doctor is required for the administration of a drug called Misoprostol or Cytotec. This drug causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo.

A third and sometimes fourth visit to the doctor is required to confirm the completion of the abortion as well as a confirmation of no further complications.
